Newborn Photos | Tessa Fonseca

I am so in love with this newborn session I recently did with little Tessa. As I mentioned in my post last week I would be posting Tessa’s newborn photos today. I can’t get over how perfectly they came out. She was such a dream. She was just two weeks old when we did these photos & I realized why they say you should do your newborn photos within the first ten days… after the ten days they don’t squish up & mold as easily. It seems little newborns quickly realize that they can stretch out & have all the space in the world.

Even though I couldn’t form her into little Tessa balls the photos still came out so nicely. I used my living room with all natural lighting for these photos. One other thing I learned through this shoot was the way to face the little babe. I should have faced her toward the window so all the light was falling directly on her instead of the side of her. Even still, she’s a total dream & I am insanely happy with how they all came out.

Isn’t she the cutest thing in the world? I can’t thank Lisa & Tony enough for all of the photos they let me take of their little family this year. I can’t wait for all the photo adventures to come & to watch little Tessa grow into the beautiful little girl I know she’ll be.

Halloween Mini Session

2015 halloween mini session - cardcandy

I’ve throw together my first ever mini session. I’m officially in love with them. I get to use all my creativity & create something super fun & take pictures adorable kids. The adorable kids in the photos bellow are my kids… they make the perfect models.

As much as I love offering my services & wonderful experience that I provide when working with my clients I also love sharing my tips, tricks & the way I create what I love (& what I hope you love too). As you follow me & my photography career I will always be more than willing to share my experiences, secrets & ides with you that way you can learn from me, my mistakes & my accomplishments. With all that being said I’ll dive in & share how I created my Spooky Mini Session.

It was simple to put together. My house has nice natural lighting & beautiful flooring so all my studio setting photos are in my house. I hung up multiple layers of cobweb on my wall & cut out black bats using this template. I let Adalie pick out a few pumpkins from Trader Joe’s & set them in the background. I grabbed little bottles & the chest from Hobby Lobby & the hand bowl is from Target. Add some dry ice & you have the perfect Halloween setting. I got the template for my advertising on Etsy. I am no graphic designer so I always head to Etsy for anything that is beyond my skill level!

I’ve had countless photoshoots with kids this summer & have come to discover that they are happiest when they are doing something fun. You’ll get real & authentic moments from them if you give them something to do & capture all of the fun they’re having. What’s more fun than getting photos of your children being children?

I can’t wait to share all of the mini session photos with you all later on & I can promise you that this is just the beginning. Mini sessions are going to be a regular for me! For now enjoy my adorable little models making some magical potion that they probably hoped would turn me into a frog.

How cute are my models? They always do a great job with my constant photography needs. If you haven’t booked a session yet shoot me an email at & we’ll lock it down! If you feel like creating your own little photoshoot with your babes it’s easier than you think. Do it & hashtag your photos with #craftfoodlove so I can see all the adorableness!

Have you ever done a mini session? If so, what are some tips you’ve learned from doing them?

Maternity Photoshoot: Lisa Fonseca

Lisa & I were best friends in early high school & some of my silliest memories come from hanging out with her. One of my fondest is chilling in her front yard for close to two hours acting like we were Stewart from MADtv. We would make ourselves laugh so hard & honestly… if other people saw us or heard what we were laughing at they’d think we were two complete idiots. Because of our silly history I was so excited to go out & capture some of her silliness with her & her adorable baby tummy!

Lisa & Tony have been together for awhile now & I knew a little babe was soon to come for them. Lisa makes one beautiful pregnant momma & Tony seems to be the most supportive, loving & amazing husband. He made her laugh with his little remarks. He held her hand & opened the door for her. Their love for one another shined so much throughout my short time with them. I am truly excited for their future as a mom & dad. I know that they’ll make amazing parents.

We went to a little park in American Fork for our photos. There was little trail, a lot of trees & some tall wheat. All of that plus the cutest pregnant girl made for perfect photos.

As I’m growing into my photography style I am learning that I LOVE close up shots. I want to get cozy with my client & get all the little details. I also love capturing the pure love between two people. The random moments where they’re doing something cute that I just snap. I truly am loving the direction I am going & loving all the amazing people I get to work with.

When working with people I find it hard to get them to relax sometimes. What are some of your tips to get real smiles or laughs out of people?

Outfit of the Month: Cowgirl Boots & Button Downs

I don’t know about you but I’m the kind of girl that has an outfit of the month. One outfit that I tend to love for a whole month. So I decided that I would give you one outfit each month that’s been my favorite. My outfits will also tie into my photography as well. The outfits you see each month will be my favorite to wear casually but also my favorite outfits to do shoots in.

This outfit is simple… & I’ll be honest it’s more my outfit of the summer than the month. I have loved it for shoots because the top is simple & airy, my pants & boots give me good protection when wondering through weeds & plants searching for the right spot to shoot from. I got the boots at the beginning of this summer & promised my husband I would wear them all the time. I held strong to that promise & have worn them so much that I’ll probably need a new pair for next summer… someone find my husband & convince him of that!

I usually pair this outfit with a purplish lip which I think contrasts nicely with the teal top. My hair is curled all the time because it’s easy & cute. I ALWAYS bring a hair tie with me on shoots… not just on shoots but everywhere I go. If you can’t tell I have so much hair & it can get warm underneath all of that so I always make sure I have something to throw it up in.

Here is the outfit of the month… simple, fun & cute.

I’m lucky enough to have a photographer as a husband so finding someone to drag around & take photos of me is easy. He is always so willing to help me out & keep pushing me along. I truly am lucky to have such a great man in my life. Plus, look at the adorable boots he got me… that makes him a keeper for sure!

Wedding Reception: Marlowe & Kroneberger

One thing most of you don’t know about me is that I work at Snowbird Summer & Ski Resort part time. I have worked there for eight years. They have been an amazing company to work for that has taught me so much & have done everything they can to work with when I became a momma. While working there I have made many amazing friends. Riley is one of those friends I have been lucky enough to meet. I was so excited for him when he said he was getting married & he was nice enough to let me come & take photos of his reception.

I knew the reception was going to be at Little America in downtown Salt Lake City & I was really hoping the reception would be outdoors. I am definitely a natural light photographer so when I got to the reception location I was faced with a challenge of different lighting than I have ever worked with. I was working without a flash which made it a bit difficult. I had to find the right angles & spots to shoot that gave me enough light for my shots.

Even with the challenge of lighting I think I got some amazing photos. I got to really capture the fun of their wedding. Their friends & family are so silly & a blast to photograph. Riley & Kandy are surrounded by amazing people who all truly love them. Their wedding wasn’t a huge wedding with hundreds of people it was full of the people that they love & care for. Through the night I watched Riley & Kandy interact with every single one of their guests for toasts, hugs & dances. The love surrounding them in that room is what I hope every bride & groom can experience.

I walked with Riley’s dad outside to wait for the firetruck. His dad is a firefighter & they were leaving the night on a firetruck. The excitement he had about doing this for his son & new daughter was radiating through him. He was so proud & happy to be able to share something so special to him with two very special people.

Wedding photography is a whole new experience that I am so excited to be apart of. Any wedding photographers out there? What are some tips you have on working with challenging lighting?

Pie & Beer Day

If you’re not from Utah you’ve probably never heard of Pioneer Day that’s celebrated on the 24th of July… It’s a Utah holiday to celebrate the Mormon Pioneers that found the state. Neither my husband nor I grew up in Mormon families, so we never celebrated the holiday as children. When we became adults the day turned into Pie & Beer Day for those of us that are not Mormon, but still love our state just as much & want to celebrate the beauty of it.

So here we are. Utah lovin’ beer drinkin’ Utahns & we couldn’t love Pie & Beer Day any more than we do. Lorin & I took the kids down to Liberty Park for the Indian Heritage Festival they were throwing & walked around for a little while. After that we made our way up to Red Butte Gardens. They were doing free admissions that day so we went & walked around. The gardens are stunning. They do summer concerts there every year & I’ve yet to go to one. Hopefully next year we can make the time to break free from the kids, pack up our wine & enjoy a nice summer concert. That night we went to the Salt Lake Bees game which was a blast. They did an awesome firework show & the beer under the summer setting sun set the mood perfectly for Beer & Pie Day!

When we were at Liberty Park they had a guy taking pictures of people in a giant chair. As a full on joke & celebration of Pie & Beer Day we decided all of us including the kids needed huge fake beer bottles. Lo & I couldn’t stop laughing at the silliness of the photo & the kids less than enthusiastic expressions about what their crazy moms were up to. It’s a photo both Lo & I will cherish & probably a tradition we’ll make with the kids yearly. They’ll learn to love us for it, right?

I seriously love holidays & any reason to celebrate where I live, I jump on it! What are your favorite ways to celebrate the place you call home?

Engagements: TJ & Breanna

I seriously have the most amazing sister & future brother… I told them I’d love to take their engagements but wasn’t sure if they would be willing since I have little… Well, I’ll be honest… No expertience doing photoshoots. They quickly became excited about having me be apart of it & agreed to let me do their photos.

For my first time doing any sort of photoshoot & maybe the 5th time using a DSLR camera I’d have to say I did a decent job. My first round of post production edits were kind of a mess… I am still learning so much about Photoshop that the photos didn’t look as I was picturing them. The photos you see now are my second round of edits & they look far better than my first.

I can’t thank my sister & her lucky fiancé enough for putting their trust in me & letting me take their photos. It was such a learning experience & got me exited for my future in the photography world.

Any tips & advice for portrait photography? I’m still learning & would love any extra advice!
