Book Review: The Great Gatsby

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Everyone knows of The Great Gatsby. Most of us were forced to read it in high school… although I never did. I’ve never been one for forced reading. Ten years later & I’ve finally read one of the best books ever written. How did everyone let me miss out on such a phenomenal book for this long?

Gatsby is the most intriguing characters that I have read. He is charming, smooth & in my head looks just like Leonardo Dicaprio… who can complain about that? I’ve always been one for secretive men (I married one) which made me quickly hooked on Gatsby. As you get to know his character you learn that his charm is far more brilliant than you thought. His charisma seems to be toxic. I wish I could live a life with Gatsby in it.

I use the word magical for books often… because I always feel that books take you to another world. That they bring out some sort of magic in you from a time or place you haven’t yet/won’t experience. The Great Gatsby is just that. A magical tale full of love, carisma & tragedy. Set in the 1920’s you can truly feel the beauty from the era. The drinks flowing, dancing until dusk & fur coats. All of it incorporated in this book. You’re taken on a ride through an era all of us wish we could have lived through… & you get to live it with Gatsby.

If you’re like me & have yet to pick up this book & give it a chance I suggest you do. You’ll be taken on one incredible journey.

Now, here are some questions for you & your book club or if you’ve read the book drop a comment below & let’s chat!

Warning: These book club questions are spoilers. Don’t read ahead of you haven’t read the book!

1. Gatsby seems to hold a magical spell over everyone because of his secretive persona. Do you think he has something to hide?

2. Nick finally has one on one time with Gatsby. Is Gatsby what you imagined?

3. Gatsby finally gets the moment he’s been waiting for… to see Daisy. I could hardly handle the experiment I felt when it was happening. Gatsby the always cool, calm & colletive man looses his cool before seeing Daisy. Is this a sign of true love?

4. The book spirals out of control… I can hardly keep up with the magical craziness that happens. All I wanted was for Gatsby & Daisy to run off into the sunset together. But suddenly tragedy hits. How do you feel about Daisy killing her husband’s mistress?

5. I couldn’t imagine a world without Gatsby in it. If he wasn’t to die I don’t think the book could have ended. I could have read on & on. Therefor, it was the only way to put an end to the story. Do you agree with me? What would have been your perfect ending?

I hope every person in the world reads this. It is truly an incredible book & will forever be a classic masterpiece. Head over to Amazon & buy your own copy!

Family Photos: Nikki, Brady & Rowan

DSC_0044

These two high school sweet hearts killed me with their adorableness a few weeks ago. We had limited time to shoot because the sun was moving away quickly & baby Rowan wasn’t super stoked on pictures. But my goodness. They are seriously the cutest family.

Nikki & I went through Junior High & High School together. I remember meeting Brady a few times throughout the years. They always seemed so comfortable with one another. Like everything was perfectly aligned when together. It has been about ten years since I have seen these two together & it was still the same. Their true love for one another shined so bright. I loved seeing that their connection has grown so much stronger as the years have passed. Plus, they added little baby Rowan… who seriously is such a little babe. Look at his little face!

We ended up standing around chatting more than anything & I am truly thankful for that. I already adore this little family so much & can’t wait for future adventures with them.

I am surprised I got as many smiling photos as I did out of  little Rowan. Little babes truly have their own agenda. What are some tricks that you have as photographers/parents to get little ones to laugh or smile?

Maternity Photoshoot: Lisa Fonseca

Lisa & I were best friends in early high school & some of my silliest memories come from hanging out with her. One of my fondest is chilling in her front yard for close to two hours acting like we were Stewart from MADtv. We would make ourselves laugh so hard & honestly… if other people saw us or heard what we were laughing at they’d think we were two complete idiots. Because of our silly history I was so excited to go out & capture some of her silliness with her & her adorable baby tummy!

Lisa & Tony have been together for awhile now & I knew a little babe was soon to come for them. Lisa makes one beautiful pregnant momma & Tony seems to be the most supportive, loving & amazing husband. He made her laugh with his little remarks. He held her hand & opened the door for her. Their love for one another shined so much throughout my short time with them. I am truly excited for their future as a mom & dad. I know that they’ll make amazing parents.

We went to a little park in American Fork for our photos. There was little trail, a lot of trees & some tall wheat. All of that plus the cutest pregnant girl made for perfect photos.

As I’m growing into my photography style I am learning that I LOVE close up shots. I want to get cozy with my client & get all the little details. I also love capturing the pure love between two people. The random moments where they’re doing something cute that I just snap. I truly am loving the direction I am going & loving all the amazing people I get to work with.

When working with people I find it hard to get them to relax sometimes. What are some of your tips to get real smiles or laughs out of people?

Outfit of the Month: Cowgirl Boots & Button Downs

DSC_0354

I don’t know about you but I’m the kind of girl that has an outfit of the month. One outfit that I tend to love for a whole month. So I decided that I would give you one outfit each month that’s been my favorite. My outfits will also tie into my photography as well. The outfits you see each month will be my favorite to wear casually but also my favorite outfits to do shoots in.

This outfit is simple… & I’ll be honest it’s more my outfit of the summer than the month. I have loved it for shoots because the top is simple & airy, my pants & boots give me good protection when wondering through weeds & plants searching for the right spot to shoot from. I got the boots at the beginning of this summer & promised my husband I would wear them all the time. I held strong to that promise & have worn them so much that I’ll probably need a new pair for next summer… someone find my husband & convince him of that!

I usually pair this outfit with a purplish lip which I think contrasts nicely with the teal top. My hair is curled all the time because it’s easy & cute. I ALWAYS bring a hair tie with me on shoots… not just on shoots but everywhere I go. If you can’t tell I have so much hair & it can get warm underneath all of that so I always make sure I have something to throw it up in.

Here is the outfit of the month… simple, fun & cute.

I’m lucky enough to have a photographer as a husband so finding someone to drag around & take photos of me is easy. He is always so willing to help me out & keep pushing me along. I truly am lucky to have such a great man in my life. Plus, look at the adorable boots he got me… that makes him a keeper for sure!

Photoshoot: Evan’s Family Photos

DSC_0382

I am so excited to share these family photos with you all. Everything about them turned out perfectly. The lighting is magical, they are a gorgeous family & little Rykan is seriously the cutest kid ever. He is four years old & like most four year old kids there was a bit of bribing that went on to get those smile… but goodness, isn’t it the cutest smile ever?

The photos I got of just Amber are by far my favorite. The way the sun shines through her lace dress & her cute belly. In these photos she’s 38 weeks along, can you believe that? She looks amazing! I could tell baby Thea was sitting really low (They’re having a little girl & naming her Thea. Too cute, I know.) & I for sure thought I might throw her into labor by making her hike up little hills & track through bushes & tall weeds.

This shoot made me fall even further in love with photography. I have truly found my calling. 26 years later but I found it. I love working with people & engaging in a special moment with them. I love chatting with the little kids & capturing their silly sides. I am passionate about good customer service & love using my creativity as much as I can. As a photographer I get to use both of those. I can’t wait for my future & I can’t wait to share it all with you!

This little family is about to become my extended family. Zach is the brother of my future brother-in-law. So in just a few short weeks we will all be family. I can’t wait & I definitely can’t wait to meet, hold & snuggle that little baby Thea. I’ll leave you with the two most magical maternity photos you’ve ever seen!

Epic Bachelorette Party

WARNING: If fake male parts are not your thing you might want to skip this post!

DSC_0032

I wanted to throw the best party I could for the best sister ever & I think I successfully accomplished that with the help of my best friend. In one of my previous posts I talked about Manila, Utah & our favorite lake, Flaming George. We ventured out that way again for my sister’s party. Lorin & I were having our first girls weekend away from the babies for the first time so we all knew we were in for a good time.

We told the girls we weren’t going to be able to take the boat out & surprised them in the morning with it. It worked out perfectly & was hilarious. We had a boat slip for the weekend & told the girls we were just going to head to the dock to drink a mimosa before going to the beach on the for the day. As we were walking down the dock Lorin stopped at our boat & said “Hey!!! This boat looks cool… Let’s see what’s in it.” She starts unsnapping the cover & all the girls were baffled my sister said something like “Lorin, I know you’re crazy… but not this crazy.” A minute later we told them it was our boat for the weekend & they were so excited. I think all three of them were about to leave Lorin & I on the dock to have their own party before we told them the truth.

Our day started out just us five boating around, wakeboarding & swimming. We beached the boat when we saw a storm blowing & hangout until it passed by. We had lunch & played a couple of our bachelorette party games we got. The storm blew in decently heavy so we made ourselves a little shelter in the boat & hung out, sang rap song & danced for a good two hours. When the storm passed & we were safe to move on we boated around for a bit & headed back to the dock.

I made us all pink kimonos & my sister a white floral one. I wanted it to be very obvious that something awesome was going on. It worked. When we got back to the docks people were yelling “HEY! THERE’S THE PINK LADIES!” We were a hit. Suddenly we were playing our bachelorette party games with 60 people, getting free drinks & made our way onto a yacht for an epic dance party & a swim at the rope swing.

I wish I would have gotten a little more photos than I did. But I was far too taken in by all the fun to pull my camera out. Anyway! Enjoy the photos & I will have the links to all of the games & fun things we got at the bottom of the post.

I am so glad my sister is surrounded by so many loving people & has some of the best friends ever. The weekend really was perfect & so much fun. I think we need a yearly girls trip! Minus all the fake penises. I also made awesome Swag Bags for the girls. I will have a post with all the details on that later on this month. So watch for it!
